Welcome to the Isle of Man Amateur Radio Society

We are a small group of individuals based on the Isle of Man - a small island in the middle of the Irish (or Celtic) Sea, surrounded by England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

The club was affiliated to the Radio Society of Great Britain in April 1948. We are licensed under the terms and conditions of OFCOM in the UK, and the island is well known on air as "GD Land". Call signs here are GD, MD, 2D and GT (clubs). There are approximately 250 licensed amateurs on the island, but only about 50 or so that are fully active on either HF or V/UHF.

A Google map showing the shack and club night locations is available on the Calendar tab/page of this site.

Club Night

We meet every second Tuesday of the month for our Club Night at the Sea Cadet Training establishment "TS Manxman" from approximately 7.30 - 9.30pm. Meetings can include general discussions, speakers from other organisations, film nights or practical activity. Details will be posted on this site of upcoming activity and visits to other places.

To visit club night - just turn up! New members are always welcome. To find us follow these directions:

From Bray Hill lower Traffic Lights / Quarterbridge Road / Thorny Road:

Travelling from the bottom of Bray Hill (traffic lights) turn onto TROMODE ROAD. Follow the road for approximately 400 metres, passing DOUGLAS AVENUE to your right, turn into the second entrance on the right (large building with a sign saying "Department of Home Affairs". Follow the road to the left and park anywhere in the car park. The Sea Cadet building is on the left of the site between a red brick building and the Isle of Man Army Cadet Corps.

For Sat. Nav. users, the Post Code is IM2 5PA and the building is known as DRILL HALL.

Shack Night

We have a new training shack, which is also used for informal meetings every Wednesday evening.

This is located at the Scout Hall,  Mill Road Ballasalla, where the A26 road meets the A7 at the roundabout.

About the Isle of Man

Our island is 33 miles long and 11 miles wide. We have a population of circa 85,000. We are not part of the UK, or the EU - we are a "British Island" or "Crown Dependancy" - similar to the Channel Islands and the Rock of Gibraltar. We have our own Government known as Tynwald, our own stamps and currency (same value as GBP). We have our own laws here but we do have a Queen's Representative who is the Lieutenant Governor. We have our own languauge - Manx Gaellic which is still taught in local schools and becoming increasingly popular.

The island is very popular for motorsport enthusiasts. It is home of the world famous TT Races and Manx Grand Prix Races (now re-branded as the Festival of Motorsport). The TT attracts 30,000 visitors to the island every May/June for two weeks of closed road race action, while the FoM brings in at least 15,000 a year. Not just two wheel action takes place here - there is plenty of action in "Rally IOM" which first ran as the Manx International Rally in 1964. This sees competitors from all over the world congregate here to compete in one of the fastest all asphalt rallies in the world.
